Melon, a leading South Korean music streaming service, has unveiled the BTS Forest, an eco-friendly project named after the popular K-pop group BTS. The forest is located in Nanji Han River Park in western Seoul and consists of three fringe trees and 400 sacred bamboo trees. Melon stated that the trees were purchased using funds donated by its subscribers, who contribute 2 percent of their monthly payment to the project. When the donation reaches 20 million won ($16,762), it is given to the Korean Federation for Environmental Movement, which then creates a forest named after the chosen singer in Seoul. BTS is the first artist, both domestic and foreign, to exceed the 20 million won fan donation threshold for the project.
Melon's eco-friendly project seeks to foster a sense of environmental responsibility and sustainability among K-pop fans, who are known for their strong dedication and loyalty to their favorite artists. The BTS Forest is a tribute to the group's global impact and commitment to social causes, such as sustainability and climate change.
The creation of the BTS Forest is not the first time that K-pop fans have engaged in philanthropic activities. In recent years, fans of different groups have donated to various causes, such as disaster relief, education, and social justice. K-pop fandom culture, also known as the "K-pop army," has been recognized for its mobilizing power and ability to effect change.
The BTS Forest is a significant contribution to Seoul's efforts to enhance its green spaces and combat the effects of climate change. The city has implemented various environmental initiatives, such as the creation of urban forests and the reduction of carbon emissions. The BTS Forest serves as a symbol of the city's commitment to sustainability and its recognition of the role of popular culture in shaping societal values and behaviors.
