The coronavirus pandemic has affected many TV shows, particularly travel shows that face closed borders between countries. One of these shows is MBC every1's hit travel reality show "Hey! First Time in Korea?" which has been running since 2017. However, the show's production team adjusted its format from featuring people invited from other countries to visit Korea to featuring local expats when travel restrictions began.
As travel restrictions eased, the show made a successful return to its original format last year and has scored high viewership ratings, including an episode featuring Michelin chefs from Italy. The show's unique storytelling and fresh view of Korea's attractions through the visitors' journeys have helped it stand out among its competitors.
According to the chief producer of the show, Jang Jae-hyuk, the ability to bring non-celebrities from overseas to create a character and tell a story in a short period is the secret to the show's longevity and uniqueness. The guests of the show plan and organize their trips around the country, highlighting different travel styles and experiences.
The chief producer also notes that following along with the guests going through new experiences that are already familiar to Koreans offers a new take on the country to local viewers. The show helps to rediscover the elements that make Koreans proud and Korea interesting.
While many guests tend to plan trips around the capital city, Seoul, the production team ensures that the show stays fresh by putting emphasis on focusing on the unique characteristics of each guest.
The network is in the process of launching a new format of the show, which will expand its location from Korea to overseas. A spinoff pilot show in the new format has already drawn a positive response from viewers, and the network is developing a regular show for the latter half of this year.
"Hey! First Time in Korea?" continues to air every Thursday at 8:30 p.m. and has formed a core fan base of expats living in Korea and viewers interested in foreign visitors' experiences of exploring the country.
