A Group Exhibition Showcasing the Works of Emerging Artists in Seoul

‘Chapter II’ presents the ‘Yellow Arrows’ exhibition, showcasing the works of three talented artists who recently completed a residency in Yeonnam-dong, Seoul. The exhibition aims to provide a platform for these emerging artists, Kim Su Yeon, Cho Jung Hwan, and Hong Ju Hee, to reflect on their creative journeys and past accomplishments.

The exhibition draws inspiration from the legendary artist Jackson Pollock, known for his unique painting style. Critics have often commented on the sense of something ephemeral in his work, describing it as "something was about to happen but disappeared." This perspective highlights the enigmatic nature of Pollock's creations, where seemingly random splashes of paint transform the canvas into a profound and layered abyss. Art enthusiasts have long appreciated the layers of narratives hidden beneath the surface, demonstrating that art's true intention is realized through critical examination and appreciation.

This critique also raises questions about the limits of our understanding when faced with unknown or mysterious phenomena. It underscores the human tendency to speculate and seek the truth, even when faced with limited information. Retrospective exhibitions often face criticism for merely summarizing an artist's achievements, lacking aesthetic inspiration. However, they remain a significant exhibition style, demonstrating the evolution of artistic techniques and styles through different eras. The success of such exhibitions largely depends on curatorial approaches and criteria.

The process of selecting works for a group exhibition is akin to creating a plausible story by collecting various pieces of a puzzle. It requires a deep understanding of the participating artists, as well as a consideration of the exhibition's context and its overall narrative. In an era where images are easily accessible and the rumor of the demise of painting is stale, artists must assert their authenticity and unique artistic philosophy from the outset of their careers. This may involve avoiding existing images or embracing them as references, ultimately paving the way for a distinct creative path.

'Yellow Arrows' seeks to guide the selected artists toward a fresh perspective on their work, prompting them to reconsider the origins of their creative impulses and find a direction for their future endeavors. The exhibited works do not emphasize a specific time period or establish solid connections; instead, they encourage viewers to explore and contemplate, fostering a constant tension within the equally divided exhibition space.
