Jun So-jung, a versatile artist engaged in sculptures, sound, and digital art, presents her first solo exhibition at Barakat Contemporary in Seoul until January 7, 2024. The exhibit, titled "Overtone," seamlessly blends the realms of virtual and real experiences.
A central feature of the exhibition is a new three-channel video, also named "Overtone," documenting the journey of Park Soon-a, a Korean Japanese gayageum player. Park's exploration involves traversing South and North Korea to create music with the Korean gayageum, Japanese koto, and Chinese guzheng. The theme, "Crossing Borders," emphasizes the collaborative efforts of three performers and three composers in different locations.
Jun highlights the unique aspect of Park playing the North Korean gayageum, influenced by a Russian instrument due to the shared border. The artist expressed her interest in how these instruments reflect historical influences.
The first floor of the gallery features a series of sculptures titled "Epiphyllum I" and "Epiphyllum III." These sculptures draw inspiration from the Epiphyllum plant, known for its adaptability to diverse environments. Jun complements the physical exhibition with an augmented reality application, "Syncope," visualizing a plant reminiscent of Epiphyllum.
As a rising artist gaining recognition domestically and internationally, Jun's works are currently part of the Korea Artist Prize finalist exhibition at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea. Her exhibition at Barakat Contemporary serves as an extension of the works showcased at MMCA.
Barakat Contemporary, now located in Samcheong-dong, hosts the "Overtone" exhibition until January 7, 2024.
