Suzanne Song, a Korean-American artist, holds a solo exhibition 'Near Distance(근거리)' from Mar. 6 to Apr. 13 at Gallery Baton in Hannam-dong, Seoul.

Song is a contemporary artist who has developed paintings and installations using lines and understated colors to reproduce spaces that are immaterial beings and ideological objects.

In this exhibition, she goes beyond the existing working attitude implied by 'the pictorial representation of the space experienced', and unfolds the subtle interaction between perspectives and the variations of familiarity and familiarity it gives with more colorful colors and strict screen composition as if we were weaving.

The artist has pursued sophisticated and understated abstract paintings that utilize only the smallest units of form, monochromatic tone, and texture in the components of painting for aesthetic exploration of the reality of "space" that is not limited to a single time zone and dimension.

For example, her series of 'Interplay' and 'Intervals' since the early 2000s reveal how a single object can respond flexibly to various perspectives and compositions, and whether painting is a suitable medium for such multidimensional expression.

While she has shown a striking style of 'Picture Plane', which reveals her presence by forming layers on the canvas screen, recent works look into space from a more microscopic perspective and present her thoughts within a certain frame.

Minimal art's characteristic elements, which thoroughly exclude the repetitive appearance and improvisational elements of basic units and modules composed of straight monochromatic tones, are in contact with the formal aspect of Song's work, but she wants to selectively borrow these similarities to describe the abstract and material characteristics of our society heading toward a hyperconnected society.

The artist presents works in this exhibition that contain the fluid relationships seen at that point, such as the development of information and communication, the loss of a sense of distance caused by a mixture of reality and virtuality, and the break with modern lifestyles, and the Mobius-like cycle in our lives and the message that encourages us to embrace it.
