Seoul, August 1, 2024 — G Contemporary is hosting an exhibition titled "The Flesh of Passage," showcasing the latest works of renowned artist Choi Jeong Yoon from July 25 to September 6, 2024. This exhibition offers a profound exploration of the symbolic power of swords, reflecting on the transient and complex nature of human desire.

Choi Jeong Yoon, a distinguished graduate of Seoul National University College of Fine Arts, has garnered international acclaim through exhibitions at major events such as the Venice Biennale, Volta Show Basel, and Art Paris. The current exhibition features 19 new pieces from the "The Flesh of Passage" series, along with seven flatworks.

These works are characterized by swords adorned with colorful threads, symbolizing flowers, presented in strikingly vibrant hues. This juxtaposition highlights the dualities inherent in human existence, such as power and vulnerability, destruction, and beauty.

Choi's artistic journey began with ceramics, a medium through which he sought to deconstruct the traditional and often rigid connotations associated with swords. His approach transformed these objects into more subjective and reflective pieces that invite contemplation on human desires and societal norms.

The artist’s latest works in the exhibition focus on the visual and symbolic power of the sword, enhanced by the addition of colorful threads. This combination creates a powerful narrative on the ephemeral nature of beauty and the seductive allure of power, inviting viewers to reflect on the deeper complexities of human emotions.
 

In his statement, Choi draws a conceptual parallel between swords and flowers. While they may seem oppositional, both elements are deeply intertwined with aspects of human desire—swords often symbolize aggression and authority, whereas flowers carry connotations of allure and the transient beauty of life. This duality is central to Choi's work, encapsulating broader themes such as the interplay between strength and fragility, and the visible versus the hidden aspects of human emotions.

Choi's work is noted for its meticulous exploration of materiality and form, and its ongoing dialogue with nature and humanity. The exhibition serves as a testament to his continued engagement with these themes, offering a unique perspective on the enduring questions surrounding human nature and societal values.
