From November 1 to November 15, Gallery Zein Xeno in Jongno will host “Prayers,” a solo exhibition by artist Park Cheong Yong. Known for his “People in Prayer (Prayers)” series, Park’s works explore themes of inner peace, meditation, and spiritual connection. Initially focused on self-discovery, Park’s art has evolved into a more inclusive exploration of universal spirituality, with his works now expressing a collective prayer for “me, you, and us.”
In his pieces, Park captures the nuanced beauty of individuals in meditation or prayer through delicate ink or paint strokes. Using subtle shifts in brush movement, he portrays various states of reflection, filling the canvas with an essence of mindfulness. His approach can be described as a form of meditative practice itself, where questions about life, insights from contemplation, and profound emotions like joy, love, and contentment blend harmoniously.
Art critic Hong Kyung Han describes Park’s work as “a powerful balance of form, achieved through the minimalist application of ink and the arrangement of space.” Park’s painstaking process, involving countless minute brushstrokes, conveys the artist’s physical dedication to his craft. His compositions, featuring tens of thousands of small human forms, suggest the immense effort and discipline involved, serving as both a visual and symbolic testament to the strength of his dedication.
The element of repetition is a significant aspect of Park’s work. His countless depictions of people in prayer extend beyond mere repetition; they evoke the very nature of prayer itself. Each figure becomes part of a larger meditative rhythm, connecting viewers to a sense of collective spirituality. This repetitive approach aligns the audience with the artist’s introspective journey, inviting them to consider prayer as a continuous, unifying act.
The figures in Park’s paintings provide more than visual appeal; they serve as symbols of resilience and collective spirit, offering a sense of calm and solace to viewers. His works resonate with those who seek inner peace or are navigating personal struggles, providing a “ray of light” in challenging times.
Park’s technique of controlled ink diffusion adds depth and fluidity, making each piece a dynamic expression of tranquility and focus. His dedication to his craft transforms the exhibition space into a sanctuary where viewers can experience a blend of visual and spiritual reprieve. Each figure, abstract yet relatable, creates an emotional impact, leaving viewers with a sense of quiet introspection.
This exhibition, with its simplicity and profound thematic depth, provides an opportunity for visitors to engage with art that transcends visual aesthetics, encouraging them to connect with their inner stillness.
“Prayers” will be on display at Gallery Zein Xeno, offering a transformative experience that brings a sense of unity, healing, and reflection to all who visit.
