The 42nd Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival (BIFFF) commenced on Tuesday, showcasing a selection of eight Korean films spanning various genres.
Notable entries include Jang Jae-hyun's supernatural thriller "Exhuma" and Han Dong-seok's mystery fantasy "The Sin," which have been invited to compete in the international competition section.
In the thriller competition category, director Kim Jae-hoon's action thriller "Devils" and director Park Hee-gon's mystery thriller "Don't Buy the Seller" are among the nominees.
Rookie directors Kim Seong-sik's mystery thriller "Dr. Cheon and Lost Talisman" and Jason Yoo's mystery horror "Sleep" are vying for recognition in the rookie director competition segment.
The festival's award ceremony, scheduled for April 19th, will reveal the winners across various categories.
BIFFF, renowned as the world's largest fantastic film festival dedicated to experimental genre films, draws approximately 60,000 attendees worldwide. It is esteemed as one of the top three genre film festivals globally, alongside Spain's Sitges Film Festival and Portugal's Fantasporto.
Past editions of BIFFF have seen recognition for Korean cinema, with four Korean films, including Bong Joon-ho's "The Host," receiving awards. In 2017, director Park Chan-wook was honored with an achievement award at the festival.
In addition to the competition entries, noncompetitive screening events will feature the Belgian premieres of films such as "Alienoid: Return to the Future" by Choi Dong-hoon, "Concrete Utopia" by Um Tae-hwa, "The Moon" by Kim Yong-hwa, and "Noryang: Deadly Sea" by Kim Han-min.
