The Korean romantic fantasy series 'Genie, Make a Wish' has successfully climbed to the number one position on Netflix's weekly non-English series chart, according to an announcement made by the streaming platform on Wednesday. The show made an impressive leap from its initial fifth-place debut to claim the top spot, accumulating 8 million views during the week that concluded on October 12.
The 12-episode Netflix original series premiered on October 3 and follows the story of Ga-young, portrayed by actress Bae Suzy, a woman struggling with antisocial personality disorder. Her mundane life undergoes a dramatic transformation when she inadvertently awakens a powerful genie, played by Kim Woo-bin, who has been dormant for a thousand years in the vast deserts of Dubai. In exchange for granting him his freedom, the ancient genie offers to fulfill three wishes for Ga-young, setting the stage for an enchanting romantic comedy filled with magical possibilities.
The series boasts an impressive creative team led by acclaimed writer Kim Eun-sook, who has established herself as one of South Korea's most successful television writers. Kim Eun-sook's remarkable track record includes a series of blockbuster TV dramas that have captivated audiences both domestically and internationally, including the beloved 'Secret Garden' from 2010, the popular youth drama 'Heirs' in 2013, the military romance 'Descendants of the Sun' in 2016, and the supernatural hit 'Guardian: The Lonely and Great God' which aired from 2016 to 2017.
The directorial duties for 'Genie, Make a Wish' were taken over by Ahn Gil-ho, who previously gained recognition for directing the critically acclaimed series 'The Glory.' Ahn Gil-ho stepped in to helm the project following the departure of the original director Lee Byeong-heon, who is well-known in the industry for his work on various successful productions including the 2019 comedy film 'Extreme Job' and the recent Netflix series 'Chicken Nugget' in 2024. This change in directorial leadership has clearly not hindered the show's success, as evidenced by its rapid rise to the top of the international charts.
