In an unprecedented fusion of Eastern and Western rock traditions, Croatia's rising hard rock band Jelusick has joined forces with South Korea's legendary rock group YB for an ambitious cross-cultural musical project. The collaboration, known as the "YB x Jelusick ODYSSEY Project," represents a groundbreaking example of international musical diplomacy that bridges two distinct rock scenes separated by thousands of miles.
Jelusick, fronted by powerhouse vocalist and keyboardist Dino Jelusick, formed in 2022 and has quickly established itself as a versatile four-piece ensemble capable of seamlessly blending rock, metal, funk, and acoustic blues. The band released their debut album "Follow the Blind Man" in September 2023, with a highly anticipated follow-up scheduled for release on September 19. Their partnership with YB, led by veteran singer-songwriter Yoon Do-hyun, marks the Croatian band's first official collaboration with a Korean act and their ambitious entry into the Asian music market.
The "ODYSSEY" project extends far beyond a simple concert series, encompassing a comprehensive cultural exchange initiative backed by the Korea Creative Content Agency. The collaboration spans six performances across both countries, aiming to foster broader cultural understanding through music, tourism, and media partnerships. The tour has already featured successful shows in Jeonju and Seoul, with upcoming Croatian performances scheduled at Spancirfest in Varazdin and a final show in Valpovo on August 31.
Despite the significant age gap between the two bands, their musical chemistry proved immediate and undeniable. YB, whose illustrious career began in 1996 under the original name Yoon Do-hyun Band, brings nearly three decades of experience to the partnership. For the Korean rock icons, this collaboration represents both a career milestone and an exciting new frontier in international musical exchange. "Without Yoon Do-hyun, this wouldn't have happened," Dino explained during a recent interview at the Croatian National Tourist Board in central Seoul. "The door has just opened for us to introduce each other's music to both countries."
The collaboration stems from deep mutual respect and admiration between the artists, rooted in their shared commitment to musical excellence across multiple genres. Dino first discovered YB through their February release "Daydream," which showcased an unexpected metal edge that impressed the Croatian musician. "We knew they were already an immensely popular pop-rock band in Korea," Dino recalled. "But when you listen to Yoon Do-hyun's growling and the heavier sounds he now pursues, it feels as if he's been doing metal his whole life. Mastering even one genre is difficult, but he manages to cover them all, which is iconic."
Having shared stages with legendary acts like Whitesnake, Dino brings considerable experience performing alongside world-class musicians. However, he describes Yoon Do-hyun as something truly unique in the music world. "Listening to his voice and talking about the music he pursues, I realized how open-minded he is, and that's really rare," Dino observed. "Few artists are so deeply interested in music itself and excel across multiple genres. So sitting with him, you feel like you're witnessing something important."
The strategic partnership aims to create new opportunities in both markets, with Croatia representing untapped potential and Korea offering an established global platform. "We thought it would be great to bring YB's music to Croatia," Dino explained. "Our market can be tough to break into, but we believe this collaboration will attract people. It's the first time a Croatian band has partnered with a Korean band, which makes this an unprecedented example of international musical exchange." He noted that while Korea has already cemented its place in the global music market with numerous international artists performing regularly, relatively fewer acts make their way to Croatia.
Both bands share remarkable musical versatility, which Dino identifies as the foundation of their natural partnership. "We're a balanced band, and so are they," he explained. "Together we can create a great blend, from softer songs to heavier ones. We'll attract fans across genres." This musical flexibility has already impressed audiences, particularly at the recent Jeonju Ultimate Music Festival, where Jelusick experienced Korean rock enthusiasm firsthand. "The audience was jumping, dancing and completely losing themselves in the music. We were so grateful," Dino recalled. "Korean audiences feel hungry for music. Croatian fans are similar, though they know the lyrics, which creates a different kind of connection. But the intensity of the response is the same, and that's amazing."
The success of their live performances has sparked discussions about capturing their collaborative energy in a recorded format. "We've already swapped songs and performed each other's music at JUMF, so we have some ideas," Dino revealed with enthusiasm. "Nothing is confirmed yet, but it would be great if a joint album came out in the future." The possibility of a live album documenting their cross-cultural musical fusion represents an exciting prospect for fans of both bands.
As honorary ambassadors supported by cultural institutions from both Croatia and South Korea, the members of Jelusick are acutely aware of their broader responsibility in representing their country's musical heritage. "Of course, we feel immense responsibility," Dino acknowledged. "We want people to truly experience Croatian music. Please prepare yourselves, listen to our songs, and if you like them, come to our shows. And also do continue to support YB, including their new music."
Looking toward the future, Jelusick expresses strong enthusiasm for expanding their presence in the Korean market and deepening their relationship with Korean audiences. "We hope to perform more shows in Korea, hopefully in winter. We love our Korean fans," Dino concluded, adding "Saranghaeyo" – Korean for "I love you" – demonstrating the band's genuine affection for their new fanbase. This groundbreaking collaboration between Croatian and Korean rock traditions promises to open new pathways for international musical exchange and cultural understanding.
