Jeonghan, a member of the popular K-pop group Seventeen, will begin his mandatory military service on September 26, as confirmed by his agency, Pledis Entertainment, on Thursday. This marks a significant milestone for the group, as Jeonghan will be the first of Seventeen's 13 members to enlist.
Due to a previous ankle surgery about nine months ago, Jeonghan will serve as an alternative social agent, rather than in active military duty. At 29 years old, Jeonghan is among the oldest members of Seventeen, alongside S.Coups and Joshua. However, S.Coups was exempted from military service following knee surgery, while Joshua, as a U.S. citizen, is not required to serve.
Jeonghan’s upcoming enlistment has implications for Seventeen’s promotional activities. He will not participate in the promotion of the group's highly anticipated 12th EP, which is set to be released in October. Despite this, fans will still be able to see him in the music video for the EP’s title track, as it was filmed prior to his enlistment. Unfortunately, he will also be absent from Seventeen's international tour, Right Here, which will kick off with two concerts in Seoul on October 12-13.
This enlistment comes at a time when Seventeen is actively engaging with fans worldwide. Just prior to the announcement, Jeonghan and his bandmates traveled to Beijing for a fan sign event, further solidifying the group's international presence.
As the first Seventeen member to fulfill his national duty, Jeonghan's absence will be keenly felt by both his fans and his bandmates. However, fans have expressed their support and well wishes for his safe and healthy return. His enlistment is a reminder of the inevitable military service faced by South Korean male idols, and the impact it has on both their personal lives and professional careers.
Jeonghan’s departure is particularly significant as Seventeen continues to grow in popularity both in South Korea and internationally. The group’s impressive track record of chart-topping albums, sold-out tours, and dedicated fanbase ensures that his absence, though temporary, will not hinder the band’s momentum.
As Seventeen moves forward with their upcoming EP and world tour, Jeonghan’s presence will undoubtedly be missed. However, his role in the band’s continued success, and the anticipation for his eventual return, remain strong among Carats—the group’s dedicated fandom.
