Known primarily as an acclaimed actor, Ha Jung-woo unveils his talent as a painter with a solo exhibition titled 'Never Tell anybody outside the Family', running from October 16 to November 16 at Hakgojae Gallery in Seoul. This exhibition presents 35 new works, showcasing Ha’s growth and evolution as an artist and offering a deeper exploration of his creative vision.
Despite having no formal art education, Ha began painting in his mid-20s as a way to navigate the uncertainties of life after college. "Painting was a form of comfort for me during those times," he shared, reflecting on his journey into the art world. What began as a personal hobby has now evolved into a fully-fledged artistic career, with his works gaining recognition for their vibrant colors and dynamic compositions.
One of the highlights of the exhibition is Ha’s Carpet Series, inspired by his time in Morocco while filming the movie Negotiation in 2022. During his five-month stay, he purchased several carpets and began experimenting with painting on them. This led to the creation of a series of works that replicate the intricate geometric patterns and vibrant colors of Persian carpets, offering a new level of sophistication in his artistic output. Ha emphasizes the role of color in his work, stating, "Color is temperature, it’s emotion, and it’s something that speaks to the heart beyond mere visual perception." His use of color creates a powerful emotional resonance, inviting viewers to connect with their feelings and memories.
In addition to the carpet series, Ha’s latest works also feature masks and traditional Korean tal (탈). These elements, which represent a range of expressions and identities, parallel the actor’s own experiences of constantly transforming into different personas on screen. The masks serve as both a personal and universal symbol, reflecting the fluidity of identity and emotion.
A notable shift in Ha’s artistic style is evident in this exhibition. While his earlier works were characterized by bold strokes and primary colors, his new pieces reveal a more intricate and meticulous approach. The geometric patterns of the carpet series, in particular, showcase newfound attention to detail and repetition, resulting in a harmonious rhythm throughout the works. This evolution marks a significant step in Ha’s artistic maturation.
For Ha, art is not just about creating visual objects but about facilitating a deeper interaction between the viewer and the artwork. Through his use of color and pattern, he seeks to create an emotional space where viewers can reflect on their personal experiences and engage with the art on a deeper level. His works aim to evoke a sense of contemplation, transforming the act of viewing into a personal, introspective experience.
The influence of Ha’s experiences on film sets is also evident in his art. Some of the pieces in this exhibition were inspired directly by his time in Morocco, where he incorporated local artifacts like ceramics onto carpet canvases. This blending of cultural elements adds another layer of meaning to his work, reflecting Ha’s ability to merge his artistic practice with his experiences as an actor.
With 'Never Tell anybody outside the Family', Ha Jung-woo firmly establishes himself not just as an actor but as an artist in his own right. His works transcend the boundaries of visual art, creating an emotional dialogue with the viewer that resonates beyond the gallery space. Through his unique blend of color, pattern, and personal narrative, Ha continues to carve out his place in the contemporary art world.
