MK Gallery in Milton Keynes, England, is currently hosting a landmark exhibition featuring 171 photographs by renowned Chilean photographer Paz Errázuriz. The exhibition, titled "Paz Errázuriz: Dare to Look," offers visitors an extraordinary glimpse into Chilean society during a period of dramatic historical transformation.

"They are topics that society doesn't look at, and my intention is to encourage people to dare to look," Errázuriz has stated about her work. Her powerful statement captures the essence of her fearless approach to photography, which has made her one of Chile's most significant documentary artists.

After completing her studies at the Cambridge Institute of Education in the United Kingdom, Errázuriz returned to Chile and taught herself photography. She emerged as a pivotal artistic voice during one of the most challenging periods in Chilean history - the Pinochet dictatorship, which lasted from 1973 to 1990. During this oppressive era, she developed her distinctive documentary style that would challenge societal norms and governmental restrictions.

Operating in direct violation of Chile's military regime and often defying strict censorship laws, Errázuriz demonstrated remarkable courage in her artistic pursuits. She traveled extensively throughout the country to document the lives of overlooked and marginalized communities. Her subjects included women, indigenous groups, sex workers, transgender communities, psychiatric patients, and political dissidents - all people who were pushed to the margins of society and whose stories were systematically ignored or suppressed.

The exhibition features several of Errázuriz's most iconic photographic series that have defined her career. Among these is "La Manzana de Adán" (Adam's Apple), a groundbreaking body of work that portrays the lives of Chilean LGBTQIA+ individuals and sex workers during the 1980s. This series was particularly revolutionary given the conservative social climate and political repression of the time.

Another significant work on display is "Antesala de un Desnudo" (Antechamber of a Nude), described as a haunting series that captures the harsh conditions faced by psychiatric patients in long-term care facilities. This powerful documentation shed light on the often invisible suffering of some of society's most vulnerable individuals.

The exhibition has been organized through a collaboration between Fundación MAPFRE and MK Gallery, bringing together institutional expertise to present this comprehensive survey of Errázuriz's work. "Paz Errázuriz: Dare to Look" will remain on view until October 5, 2025, at MK Gallery, located at 900 Midsummer Boulevard, Milton Keynes, MK9 3QA. Additional information about the exhibition can be found at mkgallery.org.
