Over the weekend, "The Boy and the Heron," the latest animated film from renowned Japanese director Hayao Miyazaki, claimed the top position at the South Korean box office, according to data released on Monday.
The Studio Ghibli production drew an audience of approximately 598,000 moviegoers during the three-day weekend, contributing to a notable 60.5 percent share of total ticket sales, as reported by the Korean Film Council.
Since its release last Wednesday, the fantasy film has consistently maintained its lead in the local box office rankings, amassing a cumulative total of 947,000 attendees. It is anticipated to surpass the 1 million admissions milestone on Monday.
Adapted from the 1937 novel "How Do You Live?" by Genzaburo Yoshino, the animation follows the story of an 11-year-old boy named Mahito Maki. He encounters a talking heron and embarks on a journey into a fantastical realm, guided by an abandoned tower in his new town.
In the weekend rankings, the South Korean romantic comedy "Love Reset," featuring Kang Ha-neul and Jung So-min, slipped to the second position. The film had held the number one spot for three consecutive weeks since its premiere on October 3.
