Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp, set to step down at the end of the season, secured the English League Cup as his team defeated Chelsea 1-0 in extra time. This victory marks the first of a potential four trophies in Klopp's farewell season.
The heavily depleted Liverpool team defied the odds, with seven players aged 21 or under featuring in the League Cup final. Virgil van Dijk's 118th-minute header secured the victory, with three academy players alongside him.
References to Klopp's final season are trending on social media, drawing parallels to Michael Jordan's last season with the Chicago Bulls in 1998. Klopp, since his appointment in 2015, has revitalized Liverpool, winning eight trophies, including the Premier League and Champions League.
Currently leading the Premier League and still in contention for the FA Cup and Europa League, Liverpool's ambitions for further success remain high. Klopp, however, remains focused on the task at hand, stating, "I couldn’t care less about my legacy. I’m not here to create one."
Liverpool supporters, both before and after the final whistle, displayed appreciation for Klopp and the players. Klopp emphasized the importance of the fans, stating, "As long as they are the way they are, Liverpool Football Club will be fine, and that’s the most important thing."
