Renowned Dutch photographer and video director Anton Corbijn will receive this year's prestigious Icon Award at the Abbey Road Music Photography Awards. The award ceremony is scheduled to take place on October 2nd in London, recognizing Corbijn's exceptional contributions to music photography and video direction.
Corbijn has been capturing images of music stars and artists for over 50 years, establishing himself as one of the most influential photographers in the music industry. Since 1983, he has expanded his artistic reach into film and video production, becoming one of the first photographers to venture into music video direction. Over the course of his career, he has created approximately 80 music videos, with the majority produced for the electronic band Depeche Mode.
The photographer's impressive client list includes some of the biggest names in music history. He has worked extensively with U2, Nirvana, Metallica, Nick Cave, Johnny Cash, Arcade Fire, Coldplay, and The Killers, creating iconic visual representations of their music and artistic personas. His distinctive black-and-white aesthetic and intimate portraiture style have become synonymous with alternative and rock music culture.
In recent years, Corbijn has shifted his photographic focus toward the art world, capturing portraits of renowned painters and contemporary artists. His subjects have included Chinese artist and activist Ai Weiwei, German painter Gerhard Richter, German sculptor Anselm Kiefer, British artist Damien Hirst, and American conceptual artist John Baldessari. This transition demonstrates his versatility and continued relevance in documenting creative figures across different artistic disciplines.
A major celebration of Corbijn's life work is set for August 18, 2025, with the release of "Legacy," a comprehensive 600-page tribute to his career. The oversized coffee table book will showcase a vast collection of images that document his passion for music and his personal friendships with legendary artists. The publication promises to offer an intimate look at decades of collaboration with some of the most influential musicians of the modern era.
Expressing his gratitude for the upcoming honor, Corbijn shared his thoughts on the recognition: "I always like to think that I have evolved over the years, but I am still passionate about music and still photograph musicians here and there. To receive recognition from an institution that bears the Abbey Road name and where some of my colleagues serve as judges, I can only be grateful for that!"
The Abbey Road Music Photography Awards were established in 2022 and have rapidly grown into a significant platform for recognizing excellence in music photography. The competition has gained international recognition, with last year's edition receiving over 22,000 submissions from photographers across 30 different countries. Previous recipients of the Icon Award include Jill Furmanovsky in 2024, Henry Diltz in 2023, and Eric Johnson in 2022, placing Corbijn among an elite group of photographers who have shaped the visual landscape of popular music.
