Big Bang Singer to Integrate Science and Technology into K-Content

K-pop singer G-Dragon, a member of the group Big Bang, has been appointed as a visiting professor in the department of mechanical engineering at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST). The appointment, announced on Wednesday, is part of KAIST's initiative to enhance the global competitiveness of Korean culture by merging it with advanced science and technology.

At the Innovate Korea forum, co-hosted by Herald Media Group, KAIST, and the National Research Council of Science and Technology, G-Dragon expressed his enthusiasm for the new role. “I am honored to be a visiting professor at KAIST, a school that produces many scientific geniuses. I look forward to the great synergy between the best science and technology experts and my entertainment expertise,” he said.
 

▲ G-Dragon / Courtesy of Galaxy CorporationKAIST outlined G-Dragon’s planned contributions, which include collaborating on digital twin technology research for Hallyu artists, exploring the convergence of K-culture with technologies such as artificial intelligence, robots, and the metaverse, and developing artist avatars using volumetrics, motion capture, and haptics. These initiatives will take place at the soon-to-be-established KAIST-Galaxy Corporation Enter-tech Research Center within the department of mechanical engineering.

Over the next two years, G-Dragon will also deliver lectures on leadership to undergraduate and graduate students, sharing his experiences as a world-renowned artist to inspire and educate students in creative and interdisciplinary fields. Additionally, he will serve as a KAIST global ambassador to promote the university internationally.

Earlier this year, G-Dragon made a surprise appearance at CES 2024, the world's largest IT and consumer electronics show in Las Vegas, alongside Galaxy Corporation. He is also preparing for the release of a new solo album in the second half of this year, marking his first solo project since his 2017 mini album “Kwon Ji Yong.”
