Sculptures and Drawings Addressing Identity, Sexuality, and Human Rights

The Stephen Friedman Gallery is presenting a solo exhibition by Ugandan artist Leliah Babirye at Frieze London 2023, featuring dynamic hand-carved sculptures, ceramics, and works on paper. Babirye's multidisciplinary practice addresses issues of identity, sexuality, and human rights, often using discarded materials to create her pieces. Her art aims to envision a community of queer Ugandans, and she employs unconventional techniques, such as splattering and dripping glaze on her ceramic works. One of her ongoing series, the 'Queer Identity Card,' uses vibrant acrylic paint on paper to depict ambiguously gendered subjects, shedding light on discrimination faced by the LGBTQ+ community.

Additionally, at Frieze Sculpture 2023, Babirye presents 'Gyagenda,' her first bronze sculpture, exploring themes of chosen families and migration. Born and raised in Kampala, Uganda, Babirye, a member of the LGBTQ+ community, moved to New York in 2015 and has been an active artist and advocate for LGBTQ+ and human rights.

In celebration of Deutsche Bank's 20th year in partnership with Frieze Art Fairs, Yinka Shonibare CBE RA's solo presentation is displayed at Deutsche Bank Wealth Management lounges at Frieze London and Frieze Masters. Shonibare's works on display encompass masks, quilts, and sculptures, delving into the intricate interrelationship between Africa and Europe, exploring themes of race, class, and cultural identity.
