Renowned American photographer Annie Leibovitz will present her first solo exhibition in Monaco with "Stream of Consciousness," running from July 2 to September 27, 2025, at Hauser & Wirth Monaco. The exhibition, traveling from Hauser & Wirth New York on 22nd Street, showcases a diverse collection of works spanning the last two decades, including landscapes, still lifes, and portraits that reflect the distinguished artist's creative evolution.
Rather than following a traditional chronological format, the exhibition reveals Leibovitz's associative thinking processes and creates a fluid visual conversation between photographs that highlight significant cultural touchstones of our era. The show features both familiar images of iconic cultural figures and rarely exhibited works, demonstrating the photographer's remarkable ability to balance intimacy with theatricality, capturing both deeply personal moments and universally resonant themes.
The exhibition comes on the heels of Leibovitz's induction into the prestigious Académie des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 2024, marking the latest achievement for the highly decorated artist. She previously received recognition from the French government in 2006 when she was named a Commandeur in the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, cementing her status as one of the world's most celebrated photographers.
"Stream of Consciousness" includes portraits of contemporary cultural luminaries such as artist Amy Sherald, musician Billie Eilish, author Salman Rushdie, Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, and the late physicist Stephen Hawking. The exhibition also features the rarely seen Selldorf suite of photographs, which document the historic Frick Collection in New York City during its renovation process. These images were captured just days after Leibovitz returned from visiting architect Annabelle Selldorf at her home in Maine, where they discussed the design challenges involved in the museum's sensitive restoration.
Beyond portraiture, the exhibition showcases Leibovitz's fascination with landscapes, interiors, and historical artifacts, including compelling images of Abraham Lincoln's top hat and Elvis Presley's bullet-riddled television. These associative juxtapositions demonstrate her diverse range of subjects and her intuitive eye for narrative, guided by what critics describe as a preternatural sense of storytelling through visual imagery.
Leiboovitz's distinguished career has earned her numerous prestigious honors, including the International Center of Photography's Lifetime Achievement Award, the first Creative Excellence Award from the American Society of Magazine Editors, and the Centenary Medal of the Royal Photographic Society in London. She has also received the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art Award to Distinguished Women in the Arts, the Wexner Prize, and the Prince of Asturias Award for Communication and Humanities. The United States Library of Congress has designated her as a Living Legend.
The photographer, who lives in New York with her three children Sarah, Susan, and Samuelle, has published numerous collections of her work throughout her career. These include landmark publications such as "Annie Leibovitz: Photographs" (1983), "Annie Leibovitz: Photographs 1970-1990" (1991), "Olympic Portraits" (1996), and "Women" (1999), the latter created in collaboration with renowned writer Susan Sontag. Her more recent publications include "American Music" (2003), "A Photographer's Life, 1990-2005" (2006), "Annie Leibovitz at Work" (2008, with revised editions in 2018 and 2024), "Pilgrimage" (2011), "Annie Leibovitz: Portraits 2005-2016" (2017), "Annie Leibovitz: The Early Years, 1970-1983" (2018), and "Annie Leibovitz: Wonderland" (2021).
The exhibition will be open to the public at Hauser & Wirth Monaco, located at One Monte-Carlo Place du Casino, 98000 Monaco. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 10 AM to 6 PM.
