Project groups formed through K-pop audition shows appear to be moving toward longer contract periods, marking a significant shift in how these temporary bands operate in the industry. The traditional model of short-term contracts for survival show groups is being reconsidered as agencies and fans alike recognize the potential for sustained success.
ZEROBASEONE, the nine-member boy band formed through the Mnet survival show "Boys Planet," exemplifies this new trend with their current lineup featuring members Kim Gyu-vin, Kim Ji-woong, Seok Matthew, Han Yu-jin, Zhang Hao, Sung Han-bin, Kim Tae-rae, Ricky, and Park Gun-wook. The group operates under WAKEONE Entertainment and has demonstrated the commercial viability of project groups in today's market.
Historically, project groups created through audition programs were designed with predetermined expiration dates, typically lasting between 18 months to two and a half years. This limited timeframe often prevented these groups from reaching their full commercial potential, as they were just beginning to establish themselves when their contracts ended.
The success of recent project groups has prompted industry stakeholders to reconsider these restrictive timelines. Agencies are now exploring options for contract extensions and longer initial agreements, recognizing that the investment in training and promoting these groups can yield greater returns with extended active periods.
This shift reflects broader changes in the K-pop industry's approach to talent development and group management. As the global popularity of K-pop continues to grow, the traditional boundaries between permanent and temporary groups are becoming increasingly blurred, potentially reshaping how future audition show winners are managed and promoted.
