Emerging Talents Unveil Inner Worlds Through Paper Sculptures and Oil Paintings at G Gallery in Seoul

In a showcase of artistic introspection, Hwang Sue-yon and Choi Yoon-hee, two emerging Korean artists, present their latest works at the "Thick Skin" exhibition, currently running at G Gallery in Seoul since Nov. 29.

Hwang Sue-yon's contribution to the exhibition manifests in the form of paper sculptures meticulously crafted from paper and graphite, deceiving the eye into perceiving them as steel from a distance. Despite their outward appearance of strength, these sculptures are inherently delicate, with Hwang valuing and emphasizing fragility as a fundamental element in human interaction. The artist contends that acknowledging and embracing vulnerability facilitates meaningful connections, encouraging individuals to seek assistance and rely on each other.

Choi Yoon-hee, on the other hand, employs oil paintings characterized by layers and lines that evoke a dream-like ambiance. Drawing inspiration from her surroundings, encompassing elements such as sound, inner reflections, and the atmospheric conditions, Choi views the layers of lines as a visual representation of the various times she has experienced. Describing her body as a painting tool, she feels a sense of traversing the canvas, leaving behind traces of movement akin to the scars of her inner self.

Choi's paintings, with prolonged observation, offer an almost abyssal experience, partially influenced by imagery encountered during an ultrasound session at a hospital.

The exhibition, situated at G Gallery in Gangnam-gu, southern Seoul, will run through Dec. 23.

Hwang Sue-yon, born in 1981, holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts and Master of Fine Arts degrees from Seoul National University of Science and Technology. Her works have been featured at the 11th Gwangju Biennale, as well as solo exhibitions at institutions such as the Kumho Museum of Art, Dimensionvariable Space, and Doosan Gallery.

Choi Yoon-hee, born in 1986, earned a Master of Fine Arts degree from Korea National University of Arts. She has showcased her works in solo exhibitions at various institutions, including the OCI Museum of Art, PS Sarubia, and A-Lounge Gallery.
