Shim Mun-seop, a world-renowned artist hailing from Tongyeong, Korea, has been making waves with his recent art exhibition at the Gyeongnam Provincial Museum of Art. The exhibition, titled "Voyage of Time," showcases his 200 works, including his early experimental pieces from the 1970s, sculptures, and recent paintings.
Shim, who is also known as Sea Sculptor, draws inspiration from the sea and uses endlessly repeated brush strokes to express the process of circulation and repetition. His works embody concepts such as creation and extinction, existence and time, consistency and openness, and coexistence and variability. His unique approach to painting has earned him international recognition, with exhibitions in Paris, Beijing, and Seoul.
Shim has been a formative artist since the late 1960s and has received consecutive prizes at art exhibitions in Korea. In the mid-2000s, he transitioned to painting after needing to expand his artistic expression within the limits of his French atelier. Shim's brush strokes reveal and hide the background, much like waves rushing in and out to create new forms.
The "Voyage of Time" exhibition is particularly meaningful as it is the first to be held in his hometown of Gyeongnam. The artist, who received the French Knight's Medal in 2007, is a source of pride for Tongyeong and continues to captivate audiences with his evocative and imaginative works.
Shim Mun-seop's retrospective runs until June 25
