Renowned actor Choi Min-sik discussed his role in Jang Jae-hyun's latest occult thriller, "Exhuma," during an interview in Seoul on Thursday. The film revolves around two shamans, a feng shui expert (Choi Min-sik), and a mortician investigating paranormal events in a wealthy U.S.-based family by exhuming ancestors' graves in a remote Korean village.
Choi emphasized his character, Sang-deok, as an ordinary middle-aged man with a clear work ethic, aiming for a balanced presence among the ensemble cast. Despite his distinguished career portraying complex characters over three decades, Choi aimed for Sang-deok not to stand out or lack within the quartet of main characters.
The movie delves into the mysterious and chilling tasks of shamans, a feng shui expert, and a mortician navigating paranormal events. Sang-deok, driven by financial motives, maintains professional boundaries and a deep respect for the land.
Born in 1962, Choi shared his childhood experiences of observing Korean shamanic ceremonies, expressing fondness for the rituals resembling concerts and providing unique food experiences. He highlighted the gut ritual as a means to heal emotional hurt and emphasized the tradition passed down for thousands of years.
In reflecting on his acting career, Choi expressed pride in his lifelong dedication to the craft, noting that, at his age, he continues to find fulfillment in acting, making it an integral part of his life.
