Korean Film Council Reports 22.5% Year-on-Year Increase in November Ticket Sales

The Korean Film Council (KOFIC) reports that the success of the modern historical drama film "12.12: The Day" has significantly contributed to improved November ticket sales at local theaters. According to KOFIC data, November ticket sales reached 70.2% of pre-pandemic levels, totaling 41.1 billion won, marking a notable 22.5% increase compared to the same period last year.

The average November ticket sales at cinemas from 2017 to 2019 stood at 58.6 billion won, providing context for the positive growth observed this year.

Since its release on November 22, the film has consistently topped local box offices.

With a budget of approximately 23 billion won, "12.12: The Day" is the highest-budget film among the four Korean films released in November. The movie reached its break-even point of 4.6 million ticket sales early last week and surpassed seven million ticket sales earlier this week.

Industry insiders speculate that "12.12: The Day" has the potential to become the second Korean film to reach 10 million ticket sales this year, following "The Roundup: No Way Out," which achieved this milestone 32 days after its opening.

Experts attribute the film's popularity to the interest of young moviegoers in South Korea's recent history. "12.12: The Day" depicts nine hours on December 12, 1979, during a military coup in Seoul. While based on real historical events, the film incorporates fictional elements by altering the names of the characters.
