A groundbreaking architectural project called Floating Canopy Grove has been completed in Huizhou, China, creating a unique rest stop for cyclists that seamlessly blends architecture, art, and ecological design. The innovative installation, developed through a collaboration between People's Architecture Office and artist Ziwei Xu, represents a new approach to public infrastructure that harmonizes human activity with natural forest environments.

The 36-square-meter project, completed in 2025, serves as both a functional café and a contemplative space for bicyclists traveling through the native woodland area. The design features distinctive floating canopies that appear to hover above the forest floor, creating an ethereal atmosphere that encourages pause and reflection among visitors. The architectural intervention demonstrates how small-scale public structures can enhance rather than disrupt existing natural ecosystems.

The project was brought to life through the expertise of a comprehensive design and construction team. Lead designers He Zhe, James Shen, and Zang Feng worked alongside site architect Yu Guangli to develop the conceptual framework. The design team, consisting of Liu Zhuo, Luo Qinming, Lin Mingkai, Huang Jia, Yang Quanyue, Yuan Yingzi, Cao Yuxuan, and Wang Zihan, contributed to various aspects of the project's development and implementation.

Specialized construction techniques were employed to realize the floating canopy concept. Hangzhou Zhihui Membrane Structure Co., Ltd. handled the complex membrane structure design and construction, ensuring the canopies achieved their distinctive suspended appearance while maintaining structural integrity. The lighting design and installation were managed by Shenzhen Zimo Design & Consulting Co., Ltd., creating an ambiance that transitions seamlessly from day to night use.

The foundation work and site construction were completed by Shenzhen Xinliliang Industrial Co., Ltd., who carefully prepared the forest site while minimizing environmental impact. This collaborative approach ensured that the project's construction process aligned with its ecological goals, preserving the natural character of the woodland setting while introducing necessary infrastructure for visitor comfort and safety.

Floating Canopy Grove represents a new model for sustainable recreational architecture, demonstrating how thoughtful design can create meaningful public spaces without compromising environmental integrity. The project serves as both a practical rest stop for cyclists and a testament to the possibilities of interdisciplinary collaboration between architecture, art, and ecological stewardship. Through its innovative approach to forest intervention, the installation offers visitors a unique opportunity to experience the intersection of human creativity and natural beauty in an intimate, contemplative setting.
