The Music Photo Gallery is presenting a revival of one of the most significant exhibitions in the history of music photography, showcasing the groundbreaking work of renowned photographer Bob Gruen from the 1970s. This historic exhibition traces its origins back to 1971, when the first show was organized at New York's Beacon Theatre, featuring Gruen's striking photographs of legendary performers Ike and Tina Turner.
The following year in 1972, the exhibition expanded significantly to include a broader selection of Gruen's work, incorporating images of other iconic artists including Bob Dylan, John Lennon and Yoko Ono, Elton John, and Mick Jagger. This expanded second exhibition was presented at the Westbeth Gallery, where Gruen's work received its first major critical recognition through a review in The New York Times. This pivotal review established his status as an emerging talent and paved the way for his rise to become one of the most celebrated photographers of his era.
This revolutionary exhibition marked the beginning of Bob Gruen's career, representing the first time his work was officially presented to the public. It is widely considered one of the first showcases of large-format music photography in New York City. At a time when music imagery was primarily limited to album covers and magazines, Gruen's bold decision to present his silver gelatin prints in impressive dimensions up to 30 x 40 inches was truly revolutionary, fundamentally redefining how music photography could be exhibited and perceived as fine art.
More than fifty years later, The Music Photo Gallery has the privilege of presenting this historic collection once again. The exhibition was first shown in the gallery's SoHo space in New York, followed by a presentation at Photo London. It is currently being featured at leading art fairs and prestigious institutions around the world, and will continue its international tour at prominent cultural venues, fairs, and museums in collaboration with TMPG.
The exhibition can be viewed online or in person through private appointments with the gallery. TMPG – The Music Photo Gallery is located at 118 S 3rd St. Brooklyn, NY 11249, and operates by appointment only. Additional information is available at www.MusicPhoto.net and www.bobgruen.com.
