Jung Woo-sung, a veteran actor with over 40 television and film credits spanning three decades, steps into the role of Lee Tae-shin in the historical drama "12.12: The Day," set to premiere on Wednesday.
The film delves into the tumultuous nine hours of a military coup on December 12, 1979, following the assassination of military dictator Park Chung-hee. Directed by Kim Sung-su, the narrative revolves around Lee Tae-shin, the Capital Defense Commander, who opposes the coup led by Chun Doo-kwang, played by Hwang Jung-min.
Initially hesitant about the role, Jung Woo-sung expressed concerns about portraying a fictional character in the context of real historical events. However, he was drawn to the challenge of depicting a man of principle who stands against the chaos.
To capture the essence of Lee Tae-shin, director Kim suggested Jung "act like water," embodying transparency, tranquility, and flexibility in contrast to the fire-like character of Chun Doo-kwang.
"12.12: The Day" marks Jung Woo-sung's fifth collaboration with director Kim Sung-su, spanning their work together since "Beat" in 1997 to the present film. The actor praised the director as the best colleague who taught him about filmmaking.
Reflecting on the film, Jung emphasized its exploration of human nature amidst chaotic events. He noted that the narrative goes beyond the concept of winners and losers, focusing on depicting a man who remains true to himself in the face of adversity.
Known for his versatility, Jung Woo-sung has been actively engaged in the film industry, making his directorial debut with "A Man of Reason" in July last year. Despite a busy schedule, he expressed his ongoing excitement for working on film sets and the continuous journey of self-discovery inherent in being an actor.
As "12.12: The Day" prepares to hit the screens, Jung Woo-sung's portrayal of Lee Tae-shin adds another layer to his extensive and acclaimed career in the Korean entertainment industry.
