Japanese K-Pop Group Unicode Debuts with Focus on "K-City Pop" Genre

Japanese K-pop girl group Unicode has emerged onto the music scene with a goal of promoting the "K-city pop" genre. Comprised of five winners from the Japanese online audition "Project K" — Erin, Hana, Sooah, Yura, and Mio — the group released their debut album, "Hello World: Code J Ep.1," on Wednesday, featuring the lead single "Let Me Love."
The album received support from notable figures in the K-pop industry. Jinyoung of B1A4, known for producing hits such as "When the Cherry Blossom Fades" by I.O.I, produced the song, while Shindong of Super Junior directed its music video.
At a press event in Seoul marking their debut, Unicode members expressed their dedication to K-pop, with Hana citing Sana from the popular K-pop group TWICE as her role model.
The group aims to promote "K-city pop," a genre that evokes nostalgia while infusing elements of both K-pop and J-pop. Erin emphasized the unique allure that Japanese members bring to the genre, stating, "Since we are Japanese, we can add our own allure to K-city pop while presenting the charms of both K-pop and J-pop."
