In a strategic move to further solidify its position as a leading force in the K-pop industry, SM Entertainment, one of South Korea's top entertainment agencies, recently unveiled its plans to introduce three new bands this year. The much-anticipated announcement includes the formation of a fresh boy band, featuring NCT members Sungchan and Shotaro, as well as the establishment of a new NCT sub-unit based in Japan. Additionally, preparations are underway for the highly anticipated debut of a new girl group.
Jang Cheol-hyuk, the CEO of SM Entertainment, revealed these exciting developments through a YouTube video, presenting the company's future initiatives and strategies on Wednesday. The CEO emphasized that the new NCT group represents the final chapter in NCT's expansive growth, aiming to create a team that possesses a distinct identity while staying true to NCT's region-based concept.
Currently, the boy band NCT consists of several sub-groups, including NCT 127, a sub-unit based in Seoul, WayV, a group targeting the Chinese market, and NCT Dream, comprising the younger members of NCT. The forthcoming NCT band will shift its focus to Japan, serving as the ultimate sub-unit of NCT, with a greater emphasis on Japanese members compared to the agency's existing bands. SM Entertainment will also collaborate with a Japanese media company to provide fans with unprecedented access to the selection and debut process of this group, marking a significant milestone in the history of the K-pop industry.
"We will soon unveil two new SM Rookies of Korean and Japanese nationalities, who will join 'NCT's New Team'," announced Jang, further stating that a pre-debut reality program is currently in the works to select the remaining members of the boy band. It was also revealed that Shohei, previously announced as an SM Rookie, unfortunately, will not be able to join the group due to health reasons, although the agency plans to support his future solo activities.
Jang extended his heartfelt apologies to the dedicated fans of NCT, explaining that the decision to form a new group with Sungchan and Shotaro was made after sincere discussions with the members. As of now, the two talented artists have not been assigned to either NCT 127 or WayV.
"We extend our sincerest apologies and gratitude to these two artists who have patiently awaited the formation of their own team," expressed Jang.
In addition to Sungchan and Shotaro, SM Rookies' Eunseok and Seunghan are confirmed to join the new group, alongside other members of Korean and American nationalities, whose identities have yet to be revealed.
While details about the upcoming girl group remain scarce, SM Entertainment disclosed that the debut is expected to take place in the fourth quarter of this year. The agency previously introduced the members through an open showcase in March, teasing fans with the promise of a dynamic and multi-talented lineup.
"Some aspects of our plans have experienced slight delays compared to our initial timeline outlined in the 'SM 3.0' blueprint announced last February. We ask for your understanding as these adjustments were made to ensure the best possible outcomes," remarked CEO Jang.
SM Entertainment's "SM 3.0" blueprint pledges a multi-label system, the introduction of new bands, an increased number of albums, and enhanced revenue generation. With its ambitious expansion plans, the agency continues to captivate global audiences, cementing its position as a powerhouse in the ever-evolving K-pop landscape.
