Busan to Establish Specialized School for K-Pop Education by 2028

Busan, South Korea's vibrant second-largest city, is set to take a significant step in nurturing the next generation of K-pop talent. On Friday, the city's education authorities unveiled their ambitious plans to establish a specialized high school focused on educating students in the art of K-pop and related performances, with an expected opening by the year 2028.

The newly proposed school aims to provide students with top-notch education in vocals, dance, composing, and songwriting, all taught by experienced K-pop faculty. Superintendent of education in Busan, Ha Yoon-su, revealed that international students will also have the opportunity to apply, signaling the city's commitment to attracting talents from around the globe.

As the vision takes shape, officials at the Busan Metropolitan Government are actively considering various locations for the school. An official at the government explained that one of the options under review is an existing vacant school in the Gangseo-gu area of Busan, although no final decision has been made yet.

Construction is tentatively scheduled to begin in January 2027, with the school's doors anticipated to open in March 2028, signaling a new era for K-pop education in the region.

While the school is still in the early stages of planning, authorities intend to create a dedicated task force to oversee the project. Details such as the school's size and curriculum will be meticulously determined at a later stage, ensuring the institution's effectiveness and alignment with the evolving demands of the K-pop industry.

If the vision materializes, Busan's specialized K-pop high school will be a groundbreaking addition to the city's education landscape. It will represent the first public school in the region dedicated to nurturing K-pop talents, underscoring Busan's commitment to becoming a prime hub for aspiring artists.

South Korea already boasts a K-pop high school, the High School of Korean Pop and Performing Arts, which opened its doors in South Chungcheong Province in 2020. Additionally, some teen members of K-pop groups have attended or are currently attending private high schools in Seoul, such as the School of Performing Arts.

With Busan's new venture, the city envisions creating a breeding ground for young talents, providing them with comprehensive training, mentorship, and opportunities to flourish in the vibrant world of K-pop. As the K-pop phenomenon continues to capture hearts worldwide, this specialized high school aims to play a pivotal role in shaping the future stars of the industry, drawing aspiring artists from various corners of the globe.
