The satirical film "Troll Factory" centers on the story of Im Sang-jin, a reporter investigating alleged corruption within the Manjeon Group conglomerate. Im's investigation takes a turn when his expose is met with online backlash, leading to his suspension from his job.
A young man approaches Im with claims of evidence regarding online manipulation by a "commenting squad" or troll factory. The narrative unfolds as Im delves deeper into the existence of this clandestine operation while grappling with internal conflicts within his team.
Directed by Ahn Gooc-jin, known for "Alice In Earnestland," the film is inspired by Chang Kang-myoung's 2015 novel. Ahn Gooc-jin cites the elusive nature of "commenting squads" as a motivation for making the film, though concrete evidence remains scarce.
The film employs a briskly paced narrative and daring editing techniques to explore the intersection of virtual and real worlds in shaping online opinions. Despite the compelling chemistry among cast members, the narrative loses momentum towards the latter half of the film.
"Troll Factory" is set for release on Wednesday, prompting discussion on the themes of truth and perception in the digital age.
