Danish design brand Vipp has opened its latest guesthouse on Norway's remote Storemolla island, featuring a striking timber structure that pays homage to the region's fishing heritage. Designed by LOGG ARKITEKTER, the elevated cabin sits gracefully on slender stilts above the rocky shoreline of the Lofoten archipelago, where dramatic peaks, fjords, and inlets have been carved by centuries of ice and wind. The new accommodation is part of the ambitious True North Lofoten Village project, a contemporary hospitality development masterplanned by renowned Norwegian architecture firm Snøhetta.
The guesthouse draws direct inspiration from the traditional rorbuer cottages that once housed Lofoten's fishing community for centuries. These modest one-story structures were built on stilts to protect them from tidal waters while providing shelter for skippers who anchored their boats nearby. LOGG ARKITEKTER has thoughtfully extended this vernacular architectural language into a modern interpretation that functions as both cabin and boathouse, with its slender support posts firmly anchored into the underlying rock formations.
"The intention was to dissolve the boundary between shelter and seascape," explains Diederik Advocaat Clausen of LOGG ARKITEKTER. The architectural team designed each unit as a precise timber structure with minimal expression and a strong directional focus toward the sea. The cabin's weathered wood exterior and sharp geometric lines create a striking visual that appears both temporary and permanently rooted in place, demonstrating an architectural approach that deeply respects the vastness and power of its natural setting.
True North Lofoten Village represents a groundbreaking model of Arctic hospitality that prioritizes environmental responsibility and cultural sensitivity. According to Snøhetta's Kjetil Trædal Thorsen, the project addresses a significant design challenge: "Working in a place as breathtaking and ecologically sensitive as Lofoten demands a meaningful response. True North Village honors the region's heritage by engaging in dialogue with the landscape and the local community." This philosophy extends throughout the development's careful balance of built and unbuilt spaces.
The village's masterplan deliberately preserves the natural terrain between each cabin, allowing moss, stone, and seaweed to form the connective tissue of the community. Rather than imposing a heavy architectural footprint, the intentionally sparse structures serve as invitations for guests to inhabit and experience the environment directly rather than simply observe it from behind walls. This approach creates a constellation of contemporary lodgings by various Norwegian architectural studios, fostering a community that fundamentally rethinks how visitors can engage with the region's raw and exposed Arctic environment.
For Vipp, the Lofoten guesthouse marks a significant milestone as the thirteenth property in the company's expanding portfolio of bookable design retreats. "Our palette of guesthouses explores different architectural typologies," says Kasper Egelund, CEO and third-generation owner of the Danish design brand. "The products remain constant, but the surroundings transform the experience. Lofoten stands as one of the most striking natural settings in the north." The company's approach maintains consistency in interior design and furnishing while allowing each location's unique environment to shape the overall guest experience, creating distinct atmospheres across their global collection of architectural accommodations.
