A 38-year-old graffiti artist from Berlin is bringing vibrant street art to a kindergarten in Konstanz, Germany, transforming the entrance area of St. Stephan Kindergarten with colorful murals featuring playful motifs and friendly bears. Jonas Rupp-Ullrich, who originally hails from Konstanz but now works as an independent artist in the German capital, has been drawing curious stares and praise from passersby as he applies his distinctive artistic style to the school's walls.
The kindergarten's leadership team, consisting of directors Tobias Müller and Susanne Watzinger, gave Rupp-Ullrich complete creative freedom for the project. This decision appears to be paying off, as the artist's work has already generated significant positive attention from the community. The collaboration came about by chance when Rupp-Ullrich learned about the kindergarten's search for a spray artist through a flyer advertising the design project.
"I contacted them and got the job," Rupp-Ullrich explained. For him, this represents a passion project of sorts. "Projects like these, where you can work with complete creative freedom, are simply the best," he said. The artist, who works under the professional name Edga, has maintained deep connections to his hometown despite his relocation to Berlin, citing family and friends who still live in the area.
When interviewed during the second day of the project, Rupp-Ullrich was nearly finished with the first wall and planned to begin work on the opposite side the following week. The entire project is scheduled to take four days to complete. Kindergarten director Tobias Müller expressed satisfaction with the progress so far, saying, "Let's see how it looks in the end." He and co-director Susanne Watzinger conceived the idea to redesign the entrance area because "it simply didn't look nice anymore."
The project has already sparked interest beyond St. Stephan Kindergarten, with other kindergartens in Konstanz reaching out to Müller about similar projects. This development pleases Rupp-Ullrich, who can envision taking on additional projects in the region in the future. His continued connection to his hometown makes such opportunities particularly appealing, as he noted that his family and many friends remain in the area.
Graffiti art has been Rupp-Ullrich's consuming passion since childhood. While other children played soccer, he picked up a spray can at age ten and has remained dedicated to the medium ever since. "I basically do nothing else every day," the artist explained, describing his total commitment to his craft. Those interested in viewing more of his work can find examples on social media platforms or directly in Konstanz by simply looking under the Schänzle Bridge, where some of his previous pieces are displayed.
The kindergarten renovation project represents a successful fusion of street art culture with educational environments, demonstrating how graffiti can move beyond traditional urban spaces to create welcoming, colorful environments for children. The positive community response suggests that such collaborations between street artists and educational institutions may become more common in the region.
