Kelsey Mann, director of "Inside Out 2," and Mark Nielsen, a producer on the film, unveiled details about the upcoming sequel during a press conference at the 25th Jeonju International Film Festival. The sequel to the 2015 animated hit, "Inside Out," introduces four new emotions: anxiety, envy, ennui, and embarrassment.
Mann explained that the decision to include anxiety stemmed from its relevance to teenagers, with studies indicating its rising prevalence among this demographic. The sequel focuses on a teenage character named Riley, whose "mind headquarters" undergoes changes to accommodate new emotions that emerge during puberty.
Nielsen emphasized the importance of authenticity in portraying teenagers' emotions, consulting experts such as professors at UC Berkeley and psychologists for insight.
Mann expressed that the sequel aims to address themes of self-acceptance, encouraging viewers to embrace their imperfections and appreciate themselves.
Nielsen highlighted the potential educational value of the film, noting positive feedback from parents, educators, and psychologists regarding its ability to spark discussions about complex emotions.
"Inside Out 2" is set to premiere in local theaters on June 12.
