The Kennebec Journal and Morning Sentinel has unveiled a comprehensive digital subscription initiative aimed at supporting local journalism while enhancing reader engagement across Maine communities. The campaign offers multiple subscription tiers, including an introductory rate of $2.50 per week with a 30-day free trial period for new subscribers.
The newspaper's digital package provides unlimited access to content across their entire network, including mobile applications, electronic papers, and newsletters. A limited-time promotional offer allows new subscribers to access annual subscriptions for $79 during the first year, representing significant savings from the regular rate. Additionally, readers can save $59 on their first year by committing to an annual subscription plan, with the flexibility to cancel at any time.
As part of their community engagement strategy, the publication has implemented a selective commenting system on certain stories to foster productive reader discussions. The newspaper believes that well-moderated comment sections can serve as valuable platforms for readers to engage with journalism, share perspectives on coverage and local issues, and drive respectful, solution-oriented conversations that benefit the community, public officials, journalists, and other stakeholders.
The commenting policy excludes most crime stories and coverage involving personal tragedies or sensitive issues that might invite personal attacks rather than constructive dialogue. All comments undergo moderation review, with the Maine Trust's digital team managing submissions during regular business hours Monday through Friday, plus limited weekend coverage. Comments submitted outside these hours may experience longer approval times.
Participation in discussions requires users to sign into their CentralMaine.com accounts, with options available for new account registration or subscription sign-up. The platform allows users to customize their screen names and provides comprehensive frequently asked questions sections for user guidance.
Recent coverage highlights include stories from Hallowell and Portland, Maine, in collaboration with the Maine Historical Society. The publication continues to focus on local and state news, covering diverse topics from community events like the Oxford 250 race and back-to-school activities to political developments including Trump administration AmeriCorps funding decisions and infrastructure updates such as the Waterville-Winslow Ticonic Bridge closure.
