The action thriller “Escape,” featuring actors Lee Je-hoon and Koo Kyo-hwan, will be released in South Korean theaters on July 3, with a North American release following on July 5. Directed by Lee Jong-pil, known for “Samjin Company” (2020), “The Man from Nowhere” (2010), and “Hindsight” (2011), the film tells the story of two North Korean soldiers: Gyu-nam, played by Lee, who wishes to defect for a better future, and Hyun-sang, played by Koo, who pursues him. Rising star Hong Xa-bin appears as Dong-hyuk, Gyu-nam’s comrade who also seeks to escape the country.
A one-minute teaser released on Friday depicts Gyu-nam and Dong-hyuk running in darkness toward a cliff, with Hyun-sang chasing them. The teaser includes Hyun-sang’s line, “Do you think the South is nothing but a paradise? There is no such paradise in the world.”
According to distributor Plus M Entertainment, “Escape” has been sold to overseas markets in North America, Europe, and Asia and is slated for theatrical releases in those regions this year.
