Westminster Council has given unanimous approval to an ambitious new library project designed by renowned architectural firm Perkins & Will. The plan involves demolishing a former NHS health center and constructing a modern seven-story library facility specifically for the University of Westminster.
The approved development, known as the 115 New Cavendish Street scheme, will replace Latimer House, a four-story building dating back to the 1930s. Located on Hanson Street in the prestigious Marylebone area of London, the existing structure has remained vacant since the University of Westminster acquired the property in 2016.
The unanimous council approval represents a significant milestone for the university's expansion plans and demonstrates strong local government support for educational infrastructure development in the area. The project is expected to provide modern library facilities and study spaces that will serve the university's growing student population.
Perkins & Will, the internationally recognized architecture firm behind the design, has created plans for a contemporary seven-story structure that will replace the aging 1930s building. The new facility is designed to meet current educational standards and provide state-of-the-art library services for university students and faculty.
The redevelopment project addresses the need for updated educational facilities while making productive use of a property that has stood empty for nearly a decade. The transformation from a former healthcare facility to a modern academic library represents a strategic investment in the area's educational infrastructure and urban renewal.
