Furniture manufacturer Knoll has announced the return of a beloved design classic: Joseph D'Urso's Occasional Table, originally created at the dawn of the 1980s. The sleek table perfectly embodies D'Urso's distinctive design philosophy of combining industrial elements with minimalist aesthetics.
The welded steel table was renowned for its visually light appearance, achieved through carefully calculated proportions that made the piece seem to float effortlessly on its concealed casters. This innovative design approach created an illusion of weightlessness despite the table's sturdy steel construction.
While the exact discontinuation date remains unclear, the table is believed to have been removed from Knoll's catalog sometime during the 2000s. However, the company has now decided to reintroduce this architectural piece to meet renewed demand from design enthusiasts and collectors.
The reissued collection maintains the original three size options that were available in the 1980s: Small (measuring 14.5 inches in height, 22 inches in width, and 22 inches in depth), Medium (16 inches high, 27 inches wide, and 27 inches deep), and Large (14.5 inches high, 48 inches wide, and 48 inches deep).
Customers can choose from three finish options for the steel frame: Black, Crimson, or Stainless Steel. The glass top is available in three varieties: Clear glass, black glass, or wired glass, with many designers considering the wired option to be the most visually striking choice.
Pricing for the new production pieces ranges from $1,600 to $4,800, depending on size and specifications. In contrast, original vintage versions of D'Urso's table found on resale markets can command prices reaching into five-figure territory, making the reissue an attractive option for design aficionados.
The revival of this design classic reflects the growing appreciation for 1980s industrial design and the enduring appeal of D'Urso's minimalist aesthetic. However, some observers have noted practical concerns about the table's low profile and potential for accidental contact with legs and feet.
This reissue joins Core77's directory of notable industrial design resources, highlighting companies and studios that continue to shape contemporary furniture and product design. The directory features prominent firms including Astro Studios, Project Duo, Alternatives, ANDESIGN, Speck Design, Curve ID, and Fahrenheit Design, all of which contribute to the evolving landscape of American industrial design.
The return of D'Urso's Occasional Table represents Knoll's commitment to preserving and celebrating significant design achievements while making them accessible to a new generation of collectors and design enthusiasts.
