French television personality Stéphane Bern has created a distinctive living space in his apartment located in Paris's 9th arrondissement that perfectly reflects his unique personality and aesthetic preferences. Through an interview with Côté Maison magazine, the popular TV host provided insights into his carefully curated home décor choices that blend historical elements with contemporary design.
Upon entering Bern's apartment, visitors are immediately struck by the piles of books and small flags scattered throughout his office space. "You don't know where to walk anymore. My books reassure me," the host confided about his extensive collection. The office-library features turquoise blue décor that masterfully combines antique woodwork with more modern furniture pieces, setting the tone for the rest of the apartment's eclectic design approach.
The remainder of Bern's living space follows this same philosophy of mixing old with new, where antique furniture pieces coexist harmoniously with contemporary creations. Notable modern pieces include Van der Straeten wall sconces and a signature coffee table designed by Ado Chale. The walls are adorned with paintings that Bern personally acquired during his travels throughout Asia, while the floors are covered with geometrically patterned rugs handcrafted in Morocco. Despite what might appear to be an overwhelming amount of decoration, the television host assures that he has actually lightened the décor over time.
Perhaps the most striking feature of Bern's apartment is his unconventional all-black kitchen, which demonstrates his flair for functional yet elegant design. "The kitchen was ingeniously fitted into a former hallway by Cyril Vergniol," Bern explained about this unique space. The entirely black kitchen blends seamlessly with the rest of the apartment's décor, featuring discreet electrical appliances that maintain the sophisticated aesthetic. "I only make a quick stop there for breakfast," he added, revealing his minimal use of the space despite its thoughtful design.
Interestingly, the kitchen houses the apartment's television set, an unusual placement that doesn't seem to bother the host given his infrequent use of the room. This choice perfectly illustrates Bern's preference for spaces that are both practical and stylish, even when they serve unconventional purposes.
Beyond the striking design elements, Bern surrounds himself with objects and mementos that hold deep sentimental value. Family photographs occupy prominent places throughout the apartment, alongside Moustiers earthenware pieces and fresh flower bouquets that add warmth to the space. In this cozy atmosphere, the host of popular shows "Secrets d'Histoire" and "Laissez-vous guider" finds endless entertainment, particularly enjoying classical music and spending afternoons immersed in reading.
Despite owning substantial real estate holdings, including a house in Perche and a Greek villa, Bern maintains a special appreciation for his smaller Parisian apartment. He finds the compact space simpler to arrange and more suited to his personal preferences. "I have always preferred small-surface apartments to find the atmosphere of a protective cocoon. Large spaces scare me," he revealed, explaining his philosophy about intimate living spaces that provide comfort and security over grandeur.
