2GIL29 GALLERY proudly presents Continuous Cities, a solo exhibition by esteemed Korean painter Moonjoo Lee, running from December 7 to December 28, 2024. This exhibition, which concludes the gallery's programming for the year, offers a profound exploration of urban dynamics through the lens of one of Korea’s leading artists.
Moonjoo Lee, born in 1972, is a graduate of Seoul National University’s Department of Painting and its graduate school, as well as the Cranbrook Academy of Art in the United States. Known for her thought-provoking artistic practice, Lee merges structural and organic elements into a deeply layered visual language that examines the intricate realities of modern urban spaces.
Continuous Cities is inspired by Italo Calvino’s iconic novel Invisible Cities. Lee’s work investigates the cyclical urban growth, decline, disintegration, and redevelopment processes. Her paintings encapsulate the allegorical nature of cities—spaces that continuously consume, discard, and expand—while addressing the social and environmental contradictions embedded within urban life.
Through vivid compositions, Lee uncovers hidden traces of humanity within these environments, inviting viewers to reflect on the multi-dimensional realities of contemporary cities. Her work transcends mere representation, encouraging deep contemplation on how individuals interact with and influence the ever-evolving urban fabric.
This exhibition not only showcases Lee’s artistic prowess but also celebrates the human experience in complex urban settings. The multi-layered narratives in her paintings prompt viewers to question the nature of time and their place within the shifting landscapes of the cities they inhabit.
As the gallery’s concluding exhibition of 2024, Continuous Cities is both a moment of reflection and a testament to the power of art to reveal the unseen. Art enthusiasts are invited to the opening event to experience Moonjoo Lee’s masterful exploration of urban allegories firsthand. Your support and interest are greatly appreciated as 2GIL29 GALLERY wraps up another remarkable year of exhibitions.
