Saudi Arabia's ambitious NEOM project has released comprehensive details about the engineering approach for constructing The Line, a groundbreaking linear megacity that aims to revolutionize urban living. Project engineers have outlined a construction strategy that begins with building forty massive skyscraper cores, each reaching 500 meters in height, which will serve as the structural foundation for this unprecedented urban development.

These towering cores will rise from a 2.4-kilometer foundation that forms the base of Phase 1, creating the essential backbone of the city's distinctive linear framework. The engineering team plans to interconnect each of these massive structures using approximately two million tons of structural steel trusses, which will form the main decks and horizontal platforms that give The Line its unique architectural shape.

To ensure precision and construction efficiency, much of the steelwork is being prefabricated in controlled environments at ground level before being carefully lifted into position. Once the structural framework is assembled, the entire structure will be covered with 2.1 million square meters of mirrored glass, creating the reflective facade that has become the project's most recognizable visual feature.

The lower levels of this horizontal framework are designed to house high-speed transit systems that will enable residents to travel from one end of the city to the other in just 20 minutes. Above these transit decks, additional buildings and community spaces will be constructed to create a compact, vertical living environment where residents can access all essential services within a five-minute walk from their homes.

The Line's design incorporates several striking architectural elements that showcase the project's ambitious scale. These include a 350-meter-tall cruise ship gateway and a massive 46,000-seat stadium positioned high above the main decks. Engineers are tackling the challenge of assembling many of these large-scale components at ground level, with some weighing up to 11,000 tons, before using specialized equipment to hoist them nearly half a kilometer into their final positions.

The cruise ship gateway will open directly to a basin connected to the Red Sea, which will form a marina once coastal barriers are removed and seawater is channeled into the newly created waterway. This innovative design will allow large vessels to dock within the city structure itself, creating a unique integration of maritime and urban infrastructure.

Phase 1 of The Line spans a 2.4-kilometer stretch and is divided into three distinct sections, each measuring approximately 800 meters in length. However, the project's ultimate vision extends far beyond this initial phase. Once fully completed, the entire development is projected to stretch across 170 kilometers and provide housing for up to nine million residents, making it one of the largest urban developments ever conceived.

The Line represents a central component of NEOM's broader vision for sustainable, technology-driven urban living that could serve as a model for future cities worldwide. The entire city is designed to operate exclusively on renewable energy sources, incorporating advanced water recycling systems and vertical farming facilities to support completely self-sufficient living for its residents.

With its unprecedented combination of engineering innovation, environmental sustainability focus, and massive scale, The Line represents one of the most ambitious construction projects ever undertaken in the field of modern urban planning. The project demonstrates Saudi Arabia's commitment to diversifying its economy and creating new models for sustainable urban development that could influence city planning globally for decades to come.
