Dowoon, the drummer of the South Korean band DAY6, has recently been targeted by malicious comments online following unfounded allegations tied to a politically sensitive climate. JYP Entertainment, the band’s agency, has announced its intent to take strong legal action against those spreading false rumors.
The controversy began on November 5, when Dowoon uploaded a video of himself practicing drums on Instagram. In the video, he was wearing military-style pants, which he reportedly chose without particular intention due to overlapping schedules with reserve forces training. Despite the context, some netizens speculated that the attire was a covert political statement supporting martial law, leading to an outpouring of hate comments and baseless claims about Dowoon’s political views.
JYP Entertainment swiftly addressed the issue on November 9, issuing a statement condemning the spread of false information. “Unfounded rumors and malicious defamation targeting Dowoon have been irresponsibly circulated,” the agency stated. It further warned, “We will take strict legal measures against those who continue to propagate or reproduce these rumors. Such actions constitute a serious infringement on the honor and dignity of our artist.”
The agency emphasized its zero-tolerance stance on any behavior that undermines the reputation or personal rights of its artists, urging fans and the public to avoid engaging in the dissemination of unverified claims.
Meanwhile, DAY6 is set to make history with their upcoming solo concert The Present, to be held on November 20-21 at the Gocheok Sky Dome in Seoul. This marks the first time a South Korean band will perform at the prestigious venue, highlighting DAY6’s significant impact on the domestic music scene.
Fans have rallied in support of Dowoon, calling for an end to the baseless attacks. Many expressed anticipation for the band’s upcoming concert, viewing it as an opportunity to celebrate their music and resilience amid recent challenges.
As the controversy unfolds, the incident underscores the growing issue of cyberbullying and misinformation in the digital age. JYP Entertainment’s firm stance is seen as a necessary step in protecting artists from unwarranted harm while fostering a healthier online environment.
