Guggenheim Abu Dhabi to Open on December 11 After Two-Decade Development

According to SayArt on July 29, Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi) announced that Guggenheim Abu Dhabi will officially open on December 11. The opening comes nearly twenty years after the project was first announced in 2006.
The museum will become the fourth institution operated by the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation, joining museums in New York, Bilbao, and Venice. It is also the largest Guggenheim museum in terms of overall scale.
The museum has been developed as a center for modern and contemporary art, with a focus on connecting artistic practices from the Middle East and the wider international community. Since 2009, the institution has been building a collection that includes artists from the United Arab Emirates, the Gulf region, and around the world.
The building was designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Frank Gehry. The project required an investment of approximately US$1 billion, exceeding its original budget.
Located on Saadiyat Island, the museum is distinguished by ten large conical structures inspired by traditional Gulf architecture. Nine are clad in stainless steel mesh, while one is finished with onyx and glass. The design incorporates passive ventilation and shading strategies suited to the local climate.
Inside, the museum features a central atrium surrounded by 30 galleries. Exhibition spaces cover approximately 11,600 square meters indoors and 23,000 square meters outdoors. The galleries will present painting, sculpture, installation, photography, video, and new media works produced since the 1960s.
Guggenheim Abu Dhabi is part of the Saadiyat Cultural District alongside Louvre Abu Dhabi, Zayed National Museum, Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi, and teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi.
The museum's opening is expected to mark a significant milestone in Abu Dhabi's long-term effort to expand its international cultural infrastructure.
