Artist Shin Dae Jun is currently holding his 12th solo exhibition, “To Find You,” at Kidari Gallery in Daegu, located at 3-5, Sinseo-ro 21-gil, Dong-gu. The exhibition, running until December 27, explores themes of memory, identity, and life’s journey through a series of evocative paintings featuring a red elephant and a young boy.
The red elephant, a recurring motif in Shin’s work, symbolizes the comforting and protective presence of his father during the artist’s childhood. This character was inspired by the warmth of a red-patterned blanket that left an indelible mark on Shin’s memories. Combining these elements, the red elephant has become Shin’s signature character, embodying nostalgia, strength, and familial love.
The exhibition paints a whimsical yet reflective narrative, following the red elephant and the boy as they traverse surreal landscapes. This visual story mirrors the shared experiences of modern individuals, offering insights into both the paths they have traveled and the futures they are yet to create.
Through his work, Shin invites viewers to reflect on life’s most essential questions. He emphasizes that the answers to these questions often reside within one’s inner self, rather than in distant or unattainable places. Shin explains, “What is truly precious is not far away but has always been by our side. I hope this exhibition allows visitors to contemplate what truly matters in life, such as self-identity, family, dreams, and love.”
The artist’s ability to weave deeply personal memories into universal themes has garnered significant attention. The paintings’ vivid imagery and emotional depth transform the red elephant into a metaphor for resilience and connection, resonating with viewers on a profound level.
This exhibition continues Shin’s exploration of the human experience, serving as both a personal journey and an invitation for collective introspection. It encourages visitors to pause and rediscover the overlooked treasures of daily life.
The Kidari Gallery, known for showcasing contemporary art with heartfelt narratives, provides an ideal setting for Shin’s work. Visitors can experience the exhibition daily until December 27, offering a meaningful cultural escape during the year’s end.
Through “To Find You,” Shin Dae Jun affirms his reputation as a storyteller who masterfully blends art with introspection, inviting audiences to embark on their journeys of discovery.
