Mixed-media works examine memory, instinct and the subconscious

Swiss artist Marco Lupi is presenting his first solo exhibition in Seoul at Gallery Harang.

Titled “Unconscious Echoes,” the exhibition examines fragments of memory, instincts that precede rational thought and emotions that resist verbal definition.

Lupi works through an intuitive process rather than constructing his compositions according to a fixed theory. He combines painting and collage with fabric, sand and paper, building layered surfaces through repeated additions of material and color.

Images associated with personal experience, relationships and memory emerge irregularly across the works. Figurative elements and abstract forms occupy the same surfaces, bringing past and present impressions into contact.

The exhibition includes mixed-media works such as “Pettegolezzo Maschile (Men’s Gossip)” and “I Suoi Disegni, I Miei Ricordi,” both completed in 2024.

Born in Balerna, Switzerland, in 1958, Lupi studied at the applied arts school in Lugano. He has exhibited in Switzerland and abroad since 1985 and currently maintains a studio in Chiasso.

“Unconscious Echoes” runs through Sept. 20. Gallery hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., with the venue closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. Admission is free.
