The Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra (SPO) is set to end the year 2024 with an awe-inspiring performance of Beethoven's Symphony No. 9, commonly known as the "Choral Symphony." The concert, scheduled for December 19 and 20 at 8 PM at the Lotte Concert Hall, promises a magnificent culmination of the year's musical journey.
The two-part program begins with Haydn's celebrated "Sinfonia Concertante," a piece he composed during his second visit to London. This symphony, also known as Symphony No. 105, is one of Haydn's most cherished works. Combining violin, cello, oboe, and bassoon as solo instruments, the piece showcases the intricate dialogue and harmonious balance between soloists and the orchestra. Its vibrant rhythms and rich melodies evoke a sense of romantic winter charm, making it an ideal choice for the season.
In the second half, the spotlight shifts to Beethoven’s monumental Symphony No. 9. This masterpiece, completed after over three decades of meticulous composition, is celebrated not only for its musical brilliance but also for its profound themes of unity, joy, and humanity. Featuring Friedrich Schiller's poem "Ode to Joy," the symphony has become a symbol of hope and togetherness, frequently performed during historic and momentous occasions. This year marks the 200th anniversary of the symphony's premiere, adding historical significance to the performance.
The concert will feature an exceptional lineup of performers, including soprano Hwang Su Mi, mezzo-soprano Lee Ah Kyung, tenor Kim Sung Ho, and bass Park Jong Min. They will be joined by the National Chorus of Korea and the Seongnam City Choir, delivering a vocal performance that complements the orchestral grandeur.
SPO’s final concert of the year is anticipated to resonate deeply with audiences, encapsulating the spirit of the holiday season while reflecting on humanity's shared values. It offers a chance to experience not only the technical mastery of Haydn and Beethoven but also the timeless messages embedded in their music.
Tickets for this year-end concert are in high demand, reflecting the immense anticipation surrounding this iconic program. For music enthusiasts and classical aficionados alike, the event stands as an unmissable opportunity to immerse in some of the finest compositions in the history of Western classical music.
