Popular singer IU has lent her support to participants of a rally calling for the impeachment of President Yoon Suk Yeol. On December 13, her agency, EDAM Entertainment, announced through her official fan café that IU had provided food, drinks, and hand warmers to those attending the protest near the National Assembly in Yeouido, Seoul.
“We hope this small gesture helps warm the cold hands of ‘Uaenas’ (IU’s fandom) holding their light sticks at the rally,” the agency stated, referring to the chilly winter weather. IU supplied 200 pieces of bread, 200 drinks, 100 rice cakes, and 200 servings of traditional Korean soups like Gomtang(곰탕, Soup) and Gukpap(국밥, Soup and rice). Participants were encouraged to visit designated local establishments near the rally to claim the items.
The food and hand warmers were distributed not only to IU’s fans but also to anyone participating in the protest. EDAM Entertainment clarified, “You don’t need to be a member of the official Uaena fan club to receive the items. They are available on a first-come, first-served basis for anyone attending the rally.”
The rally took place amid heightened political tensions as the National Assembly prepared to vote on President Yoon’s impeachment. The second impeachment motion against the president was brought to the plenary session on December 14, requiring a two-thirds majority of 200 out of 300 members to pass. The motion was successfully adopted, marking a pivotal moment in South Korea’s political landscape.
IU’s gesture garnered widespread attention and praise, with many applauding her thoughtfulness and solidarity with protesters. The singer is known for her philanthropic activities and consistent support for social causes. By providing practical aid, she further strengthened her reputation as an artist who cares deeply for her fans and the broader community.
IU’s involvement highlights the growing intersection of cultural figures and political activism in South Korea. As protests and public demonstrations continue to shape the nation’s democratic discourse, the support of high-profile celebrities like IU can amplify the message and draw greater attention to critical social issues.
Her contribution not only resonated with her fans but also underscored the unity and determination of those participating in the rally. This act of kindness serves as a reminder of the role that influential individuals can play in supporting democratic values and human rights.
