Billboard has named South Korean artist IU the country’s representative in its prestigious Global No. 1 Artist Series. Lauding her unparalleled versatility, Billboard described IU as “an irreplaceable artist.”
The recognition underscores IU’s ability to excel across multiple domains, from music and acting to broadcasting and variety shows. “While many individuals stand out in specific fields, IU is the only one who succeeds across all of them simultaneously,” the series emphasized.
The publication also highlighted IU’s widespread appeal. “IU is undoubtedly Korea’s representative artist, loved universally by K-pop fans and general Korean music enthusiasts. Her influence transcends generations, resonating with both younger and older audiences,” Billboard stated.
IU’s musical achievements and live performances further cement her global acclaim. The series spotlighted her remarkable year in 2024, noting her domination of the charts. Her single Love Wins All claimed the top spot on Melon’s Top 100 chart just an hour after its release. The song maintained its reign for four consecutive weeks, secured the No. 1 spot on February’s monthly chart, and achieved an astonishing 339 perfect all-kills on iChart.
IU’s world tour also received praise. With 31 performances across 12 countries, she attracted approximately 500,000 fans, making it the largest world tour ever conducted by a Korean female solo artist. Notably, IU became the first female artist to perform at the Seoul World Cup Stadium and the only female singer to headline all major stadium venues in Korea.
Sharing her thoughts on being named a “Global No. 1 Artist,” IU expressed her gratitude: “To hear words like ‘global,’ ‘Billboard,’ and ‘No. 1’ associated with me feels surreal, yet it fills me with joy and honor.”
As she continues to break records in the music industry, IU is also preparing for her next ventures. Her Netflix series You Have Done Well (폭싹 속았수다) is set to premiere next year, alongside her new MBC drama tentatively titled 21st Century Crown Princess. Balancing her acting commitments with ongoing music projects, IU remains a trailblazer in Korea’s entertainment industry.
