The Taean County government has announced a special exhibition titled “1894” to commemorate the historical significance of the Donghak Peasant Revolution. The exhibition will run from December 6, 2024, to March 31, 2025, at the Taean Donghak Peasant Revolution Memorial Hall, showcasing rare artifacts and documents from this pivotal event in Korean history.

Named after the year the Donghak Peasant Revolution erupted, the 1894 exhibition will feature 46 historical items, including the Paldochaesaekjido (Colored Map of the Eight Provinces) and Sanam Yugo (posthumous works of the Donghak movement leader Choi Si Hyeong). These artifacts aim to provide visitors with an immersive glimpse into the revolution’s enduring legacy and its influence on subsequent movements for justice and equality.

A representative from Taean County stated, “The spirit of the Donghak Peasant Army laid the foundation for Korea’s independence movement during the Japanese colonial period and served as a precursor to the country’s modern democratic movements. This exhibition allows us to revisit the cries for a just society that echoed 130 years ago.”

Taean holds a significant place in the history of the Donghak Peasant Revolution. It was not only the site where the Bukjeop (Northern Army of Donghak) initiated their rebellion but also the location of the movement’s final stand. The revolution was driven by peasant groups organized under Po (local Donghak units), who sought to challenge systemic corruption and inequality.

Historical records highlight major uprisings in areas like Banggal-ri in Wonbuk-myeon, Tosungsan in Suryong-ri, and Poji-ri in Iwon-myeon. These locations became key battlegrounds, with over 400 revolutionaries sacrificing their lives in the fight for equality and justice.

The exhibition also aims to deepen public understanding of the Donghak movement’s values, such as human dignity and resistance against oppression. These ideals reverberated through Korea’s independence efforts and shaped the country’s modern identity.
