Netflix’s One Piece live-action series, which captivated global audiences and set new streaming records, is set to continue beyond its highly anticipated second season. Recent updates indicate that Season 3 is already in development, with production expected to begin in 2025.
According to the official list of the Writers Guild of America (WGA), One Piece Season 3 has been added alongside the previously confirmed Season 2. The document outlines that the next installment will enter pre-production and filming phases between 2025 and 2026, suggesting that Season 2 is likely to be released in 2025 as post-production progresses. While Netflix has yet to make an official statement regarding Season 3, its inclusion in the official production schedule implies that the streaming giant is moving swiftly to expand the franchise, increasing the likelihood of an earlier-than-expected release.
The first season of One Piece was helmed by showrunner Steven Maeda, who also served as an executive producer. As the series moved into its second season, Maeda continued as an executive producer, while Matt Owens, a writer from Season 1, stepped up as the new showrunner. Notably, Matt Owens and Joe Tracz, the key creative forces behind Season 2, have also been credited for Season 3, confirming that their leadership will continue as the series progresses.
Since its announcement, One Piece faced skepticism due to the inherent challenges of adapting the long-running manga into live action. Many cited the failures of previous manga-based adaptations as reasons for concern. However, the show’s faithful visual direction, fresh narrative re-interpretation, and the direct involvement of original creator Eiichiro Oda proved to be crucial elements in its success. Upon its release, One Piece topped Netflix’s global rankings, solidifying its position as one of the most successful live-action anime adaptations to date.
Season 2 is set to introduce fan-favorite character Tony Tony Chopper, as well as explore the pivotal Loguetown arc, where Dragon makes his first appearance. The season will cover the crew’s journey through Drum Island, where Chopper officially joins the Straw Hat Pirates. Additionally, the inclusion of Baroque Works and the casting of Nefertari Vivi (Miss Wednesday) have already been confirmed, further building excitement among fans.
As production on Season 2 progresses and preparations for Season 3 begin, Netflix’s One Piece continues to establish itself as a long-term franchise. With a dedicated production team and growing anticipation, the series is expected to maintain its strong momentum in the years ahead.
